Overnight successes, sudden collapses and other fallacies.
He was an overnight success. She came out of nowhere.
“Overnight” is often the point at which opportunity, grace, preparedness and the zeitgeist coincide to thrust someone stage centre. The nowhere, is usually hours and hours of devotion, attention, obsession even, focused daily practice over years and years.
The Truth About Compounding
Preparation takes time. Things build up.
Illness too. It doesn’t usually come out of nowhere. A C-suite executive doesn’t “suddenly” collapse at work. A physician’s heart doesn’t spontaneously start racing. There’s almost always a long lead-up. Small imbalances, quiet set-asides, daily stresses that compound.
Little irritations. Quiet compromises. Years of override. Your body has been keeping score (allostatic load, if you want the technical term).
The question is not generally whether a thing will accumulate, but how. Returns compound. Compounding interest is the principle many a fortune is built on. Small, steady returns accumulating into extraordinary growth. Choices compound. Habits compound.
The Crisis
I work with professionally proficient folks, mostly women who’ve “done everything right”. Women who know the science, who’ve done the work, tried the solutions…and they know that something’s not right with them. They’re tired of being told it’s about mindset or meditation.

Not metaphorically. Literally. Collapsed.
Our Mom went to doctors and went undiagnosed for an entire year - one physician said that she was probably just tired, maybe she should stop karate. I mean, five children, a job, karate - because it made no sense to her to wait on the boys while they practised, so she got a karategi and joined the class. Turns out it was an incredibly rare type of cancer.
Your body is compounding something. The question is: what?
You can’t positive-think your way out of a dysregulated system any more than you can manifest your way out of a heart attack.
The Governor Within
When you’ve been running on override for months or years (leading through crisis, managing teams, navigating transitions, holding it together while everything around you is chaos) you’re compounding allostatic load.
Our mind-body system has built-in limiters. They’re designed to protect us, to keep us from using our full capacity…or going over our limits, like the governor on an engine that prevents it from redlining.
But we bright. Unlike most other creatures we can ignore the limits of many of our governors. We don’t eat when we’re hungry, we don’t sleep when we’re tired, we turn lights on when it gets dark and spend time in places that make our stomachs churn. We disconnect from the cues designed to protect us.
At some point, the body in its wisdom will remove the illusion of cognitive control, if that’s what it takes to keep you alive. Eventually, the Governor does what you won’t and shuts you down.
That “mystery” collapse, that sudden exhaustion, that heart flutter mid-presentation is not random. It’s your body enforcing the limit you refused to attend. The moment when you couldn’t get out of bed even though the presentation was in two hours? That’s your body Governor.
It doesn’t reset with any amount of bubble baths and you can’t negotiate your way out with scented candles or self-affirmations.
“I Don’t Want to Get My Hopes Up Again”
I know.
You’ve tried things. Good things. Evidence-based things. They worked for other people. They didn’t work for you, or they worked for three weeks and then stopped, or they required more energy than you had to give.
You’re not interested in trying something else that might help. You’re tired of getting your hopes up. You’re done being disappointed.

When my client’s heart was racing (medically significant tachycardia) I didn’t ask her to visualise calm or set an intention. I reminded her of the Valsalva manoeuvre. Next episode, she practised it. Ninety seconds. Her heart rate normalised.
A friend called me close to midnight, feeling like she was crawling out of her skin. She was considering the ER. We used one breathwork protocol. She went to bed.
Physiology doesn’t require belief.
You don’t need hope. You need to get back into your body. You need a tool that works whether you trust it or not. A tool you can use at 2 pm in the office or 2 am when you can’t sleep. A tool that’s yours (no app, no access to me required).
Once it works? Hope comes back on its own.

No crystals. No pep talks. Just physiology doing what it’s designed to do when you know how to use it.
